    Description

1867 post-Civil War era anti-President Johnson Union League folded letter (no cover) sent from North to South --- letter is headed, "U. L. A. The careful attention of all the members of the League is called to the subjects embodied in the following Circular. Respectfully submitted, Thos. G. Baker, Secretary"
The statement begins, To the Subordinate Councils throughout the State --- it says, "At a meeting of the State Executive Committee, held in the City of Albany, on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 1867, the following preamble and resolutions were adopted"
It begins, "Whereas - It is clearly no less important now, than during the dark days of the Rebellion, that the Union League of America should be maintained, and its power and strength increased, to the end that the Union shall be established on a truly loyal basis, and the Freedmen of the South enfranchised and protected in their rights and liberty, and all loyal men be free and equal before the law"
It continues, "The Rebellion of the President against patriotism, justice, and good Government, and the impudence and audacity of red-handed rebels at the South and cowardly Traitors at the North, alike demand the united, vigorous, and determined exertions of every Union-loving and loyal man in the country to defeat the treachery of the one, and the machinations of the other"
The first resolution reads, "That the Councils of this State must arouse themselves, put on the armor, and commence NOW the great conflict, which must result in the overthrow of our treacherous and disgraceful Executive, and place the control of our Government in the hands of an honest, patriotic and loyal President, in 1868."
Another resolution exhorts, "Every member of this Order be, and are hereby enjoined, as they value the preservation of their liberties, and the perpetuation of our Glorious Country, to be up and doing" --- additional resolutions continue in this vein and also notify the appointment of various organization officers and other business --- light wear at edges and corners
Historical note: Andrew Johnson, who became President of the United States after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, had been the only sitting U.S. Senator from a secessionist state to remain with the Union before he won the post of Vice President as Lincoln's running mate.
Once president after the war, he was in favor of accepting the Confederate states back into the Union quickly on very generous terms that did not include protection for former slaves. This ran into strong opposition from Congressional Republicans, who overrode a number of his vetoes and defied his opposition to the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which gave citizenship to freedmen.
The conflict grew ever tenser, as this letter exemplifies until, when Johnson kept trying to fire the Secretary of War, the House of Representatives impeached him, although he avoided by a very narrow vote conviction in the Senate. Johnson was not reelected and left office in 1869. For details, see: wikipedia/wiki/Andrew_Johnson;  DARK STRIP ACROSS BOTTOM OR SIDES IS THE PLASTIC HOLDER IN THE SCAN
