1937 Communist Party Handbill Aug 22 Rally for Chicago Newspaper Steel Strike

This auction is for an original handbill put out by the Illinois Communist Party to call people to a conference on Sunday, August 22, 1937 at the Ashland Auditorium in Chicago. The handbill measures 7-1/4" x 13-3/4". The purpose for the conference was to establish a newspaper in Chicago that "...will be the Vanguard of the People's Movement to Liberty, Progress, Peace and Prosperity in the Midwest". The handbill mentions "...lying, vicious pages of the newspapers published in Chicago...", the steel strikes in Ohio and Chicago "...While the entire civilized world stood aghast at the massacres of steel strikers by the Chicago and Ohio Police, the Chicago newspapers, led by the Chicago Tribune, have in the most dastardly way falsified everything that took place and tried to whitewash the police and put the blame for the events on the strikers...". The handbill is in good condition - it is yellowed with age - there are three horizontal creases from when it was folded into quarters - there is a 1-1/4" horizontal tear/split along the right edge of the middle fold line - about an inch above that there is a 1/4" split and light brown mark - about three inches to the left of that there is a 1/4" diameter light brown mark (in the word "and" - along the top edge there is a 3/8" split, about an inch from the left edge, near this small split there is a light stain - along the left edge at the center fold there is a 1/4" split and about two inches above that there is a 1/4" split - there is a light crease along the left edge from top to bottom - there are a few smaller creases.
