Trailering Tips
Tongue weight: The tongue weight of your trailer affects your bike in the same way as loading your saddlebags and trunk. This means you want just enough tongue weight for the trailer to pull well, but not enough to upset the handling of your bike. Generally, a tongue weight that’s 10% of the trailer’s loaded weight is sufficient. If your trailer “wags” at speed, try increasing the tongue weight by shifting heavier items ahead of the trailer’s axle.
Total weight: Our hitch is capable of towing more than any two-wheel bike should pull. It is a Class I hitch, rated for 2,000 lbs total trailer weight. However, for practical reasons (like being able to stop, preserving your powertrain, etc.), you should try to limit the trailer's total weight to half your bike’s weight or less.
Stopping distance: It will take longer to stop when you are towing a trailer and stopping too quickly can cause a trailer to jackknife. Allow more following distance in traffic and ride at speeds that will allow you to make a safe, controlled stop in all conditions. The best advice we’ve ever heard is this: If the road is dry, treat it like it’s wet. If the road is wet, ride like it’s greasy.
Length: Remember, you’re longer too! So when pulling away from a gas pump or maneuvering in traffic, don’t forget about that extra length when you turn.
