    Description

Here is a scarce satirical paper flyer that measures approx. 4 3/4" by 6 1/4" and has a blank reverse side.  Depicted is President Andrew Johnson standing astride a Copperhead snake urging on Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Hester Clymer (who unsuccessfully ran against Union Major-General John W. Geary in 1866 on a white supremacist platform) as he climbs a signpost.  An ex-slave tells Clymer to "give that up" as his Salt River boat is about to leave.  The phrase Salt River refers to a defeated party in politics.  The text below the illustration reveals that Clymer is aware of his plight.  The flyer has small edge tears and material loss as
    evidenced by the scans
with some paper over-folds that I have not attempted to straighten out.  Despite its shortcomings this remains a scarce and desirable collectible.  Thanks for looking at this auction.
