By signing this card, you promise to abstain from ALL intoxicating liquors as a beverage and that you will, by all honorable means, encourage others to abstain. The pre-printed signature is for Francis Murphy, a leader in the national temperance movement in the 1870s and 1880s. Francis Murphy is known for creating pledge cards of this kind and, as a temperance advocate, he is said to have collected 16 million signatures pledging their allegiance to the movement.
